California (Web Desk): WhatsApp is preparing to change the way its two-step verification system protects user accounts, replacing the traditional six-digit PIN with a password-based security option.
Under the new system, users will be able to create a password containing letters and numbers, providing an additional layer of protection against unauthorised access and potential hacking attempts.
WhatsApp says users who already have two-step verification enabled will be able to switch from their existing PIN to a password once the new option becomes available on their accounts.
The feature is being rolled out gradually, meaning it may not appear for everyone immediately. More users are expected to receive access to the option over the coming weeks.
The new password feature will remain part of WhatsApp’s two-step verification system. Previously, users had to set a six-digit PIN to add an extra layer of security to their accounts. The upcoming change will allow them to use a stronger password instead.
Once the feature reaches a user’s account, it can be accessed through WhatsApp Settings. Users will need to open the Accounts section and select Two-step verification.
A new password option will then appear, allowing users to create their password. They will also have the option to add a recovery email address, which can help them regain access to their account if needed.
The new password must contain at least eight characters and include at least one letter or number. Users can also add special characters to make their passwords stronger, although using a special character will not be mandatory.
