Geneva (Web Desk): A devastating explosion tore through a packed bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana during New Year’s Eve celebrations, leaving scores dead and around 100 others injured, Swiss authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The Italian foreign ministry cited information from Swiss police indicating roughly 40 people lost their lives, though local officials described the toll only as “tens” at a press briefing.

The blast struck at 1:30 a.m. local time (06:30 PT) at the popular bar Le Constellation, located in the southwestern part of the resort.

Some of the victims were reportedly foreign visitors, said Stephane Ganzer, head of security for the Valais canton. Emergency response teams were quickly mobilized, with 10 helicopters and 40 ambulances dispatched to assist the injured.

Many of those hurt suffered serious burns. “Most of the injured are in critical condition,” noted Mathias Reynard, head of the cantonal government. Valais hospital’s intensive care unit reached full capacity, necessitating the transfer of patients to other facilities.

The area around the bar has been completely cordoned off, and authorities imposed a no-fly zone over Crans-Montana. While investigators continue to probe the incident, prosecutor Béatrice Pilloud said the explosion is being treated as an accident rather than a deliberate attack.

As per the reports, officials are also working to ensure that the victims’ remains are returned to their families.
