Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed authorities to immediately enhance and activate the Meteorological Department’s early warning system to better address the risks posed by the ongoing severe weather conditions.
During a high-level meeting held in Islamabad on Friday, the premier reviewed the worsening flood situation, particularly in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, where the monsoon has caused widespread devastation.
Expressing sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and destruction of property, PM Shehbaz highlighted the urgency of improving disaster response mechanisms. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to assist the administrations and residents of the affected regions.
To personally express solidarity, the Prime Minister also announced his intention to visit Gilgit-Baltistan in the near future. In addition, a relief package is being prepared at the federal level to support recovery efforts and ease the burden of those impacted.
The prime minister emphasized the need for close coordination between federal departments and local governments to accurately evaluate the scale of destruction. He directed that all efforts should be focused on saving lives, preventing further damage, and expediting relief activities. Restoration and rebuilding of damaged infrastructure—especially roads and communication networks—must also be prioritized, he added.
During the meeting, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, provided a detailed update on the monsoon’s impact across the country. According to the NDMA, 295 people have lost their lives so far, with over 700 individuals injured. The disaster has also resulted in the complete destruction of more than 1,600 homes, while 376 livestock have been reported dead due to flooding and landslides.
The NDMA’s briefing further warned of significant water surges in various rivers and tributaries. Low-level flooding is currently occurring in Tarbela, Chashma, Taunsa, and Kalabagh, while medium-level flooding is forecast at Marala and Guddu on the Chenab River. The monsoon system is predicted to intensify further by the end of the month. In light of this, the NDMA has begun comprehensive preparations aimed at minimizing future risks and improving emergency response.
PM Shehbaz concluded the meeting with a call for swift, coordinated, and proactive measures to manage the crisis and mitigate the challenges posed by the extreme weather events.
