Washington/London (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump has raised serious doubts about the effectiveness of the international defense alliance the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and indicated that he is considering the possibility of withdrawing from it.
In an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph, Trump singled out allies, particularly the United Kingdom (UK) and France, for sharp criticism.
The President expressed frustration over what he described as the limited defense capabilities and unreliable support of NATO members. “I have always known that NATO was more of a paper tiger than a real force. I never had full confidence in this alliance,” Trump said.
He accused the allies of failing to stand with the US in times of need, asserting that while America has consistently supported them, they have not reciprocated. The current conflict, he noted, has confirmed his doubts about the alliance’s effectiveness.
Trump also mocked Britain’s naval and air forces, claiming that the UK “essentially has no navy left” and that its warships are outdated and ineffective.
He added that both Britain and France have abandoned the US in critical moments and suggested that they should now secure their own energy needs, with America no longer willing to provide assistance.
Turning to the Middle East, Trump took a firm position, stating that the US could withdraw from the conflict without a formal agreement, whether or not Iran engages in negotiations.
“We have made our decision. Now the world must take responsibility for its own security,” he said.
